Addis Ababa — A Malaysian oil company, Petronas, has reportedly won the bid for the development of the Kalub and Hilala natural gas reserve in eastern Ethiopia.
Ministry of Mines and Energy Public Relations Head Sofia Mohammed said Petronas won the bid for the development of the 118 million cubic metres of natural gas reserve in the areas mentioned.
She added that Petronas is currently negotiating with the ministry to sign agreement for the exploration of natural gas on 280 square metres around Ogaden.
According to the head, Kalub area has 10 wells with a total of 118 million cubic metres of natural gas which can be used for the production of kerosene, benzene, jet fuel, butane and urea fertilizer.
Sofia said 16 local and international companies had expressed interest for the development of the Kalub and Hilala natural gas reserve.
Petronas was finally contested by Gail India and Dinder of Sudan for the development of the natural gas reserve located 1,200 kilometres from Addis Ababa in Ogaden valley.
The company has plans to build oil refinery at Kalub and stretch oil pipelines up Djibouti, she said.
