Soroti — The State Minister for Primary Education, Mr Peter Lokeris ,has warned primary school teachers against indulging in sex with pupils.
He said the rampant act has heightened the HIV/Aids prevalence, mostly in rural schools.
Lokeris was on Saturday speaking at the eastern Primary Teachers Colleges' drama festival in Kumi district.
Organised by the Ministry of Education, with funding from the United States Agency for International Development and the World Vision, the festival centred at teachers as behavioural change agents towards the fight against HIV/Aids in educational workplaces.
Lokeris responded to demands by a section of girl-child crusaders from the colleges, that a severe penalty be placed on male teachers who engage in love affairs with pupils.
He said a number of male teachers in the country have stuck to the habit of having sexual relationships with pupils despite the dangers involved.
Lokeris said equal education opportunities for the girl child cannot be promoted with such moral decadence.
"Most [male] teachers are still ignorant of the dangers of the HIV/Aids pandemic in the country yet they should be at the forefront of the campaign against the disease," Lokeris said.
