Mauritius: PSSA Highlights Serious Shortcomings in Colleges

29 August 2006

Port Louis — The Private Secondary Schools Authority (PSSA) has not spared some colleges in a report to the minister of Education, Dharam Gokhool, entitled Partnership for secondary education in Mauritius. The situation is far from perfect. The PSSA has noted a number of areas where these schools have failed totally in the way they are educating their students.

The situation is even more worrying as such schools cater for more than half of all the secondary students. Not only are the infrastructures "sub-standard" in some schools but some managers are also described as "going beyond the limits of ethical behaviour", writes the PSSA. Likewise, some schools force certain students not to sit for Higher School Certificate or School Certificate exams to make sure they maintain a good success rate.

The PSSA, however, realises that it should have taken steps long ago to ensure quality in those schools. But, in view of its lack of staff, it can't meet all requirements. The institution has been deprived of a department as crucial as its inspectorate for a few years. It is only with massive recruitment and the creation of new jobs at different levels that the PSSA will be able to take the difficult situation in hand... and thus to improve the standard of private schools.
