Harare — IN a bid to address issues of farmers' rights and indigenous knowledge systems, the Organisation of African Unity (OAU), now the African Union (AU), published the African Model Law in 2002 for the protection of the rights of local communities, farmers and breeders and for the regulation of access to biological resources such as plants and animals.
The document is set out as a model for use by African countries that wish to develop their own national laws pertaining to the foregoing reflecting the needs of African countries.
