Lagos — Haruna Jackden is faced with a heavy burden. As the deputy director of the National Commission for Colleges of Education (NCCE), when Mr. Jackden talks about teacher training, one can easily see the frustration written all over his face.

Clinching his fist and hitting the table unconsciously during a recent interview in Abuja, Mr. Jackden says the good old days, when committed people entered the teaching profession, are gone."There are no longer committed and dedicated people going into teaching as matter of interest, unlike what we had in the past."In our time, we worked hard to earn our certificates, but today it is a different ball game in the profession," he said.
