The Electoral Commission has deffered the district level and unit committee elections to Tuesday September 26 2006. This the commission said is to enable it have enough time to comply with an order of an Accra High Court.
The Director of Public Affairs of the EC Mr Samuel Yorke Aidoo said in a statement to the media that the postponement was necessitated by the order the Court gave on August 28, 2006 varying the order of a previous injunction.
The statement said in complying with the varied order injunction, the Commission was expected to transfer the contents of 21,000 Presidential Ballot Boxes spread across the country into an acceptable container in each polling station and constituency. This must also be done in the presence of specified persons.
It said this requires time and logistics.
The Commission assured the public that it was making efforts to comply with the Court's ruling to enable it to conduct the elections as re-scheduled.
It said the varying order of injunction followed a suit filed by Mr Rojo Mettle Nunoo, Squadron Leader Clend Sowu (rtd) and Mr Kofi Porturphy, all leading members of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), against the EC challenging the mode of declaration of the result of the 2004 Presidential Election.
