Kenya: Seychelles to Compete in City Boxing

Nairobi — Seychelles' Victoria City will take part in the third Inter-cities Boxing Championship from October 16 to 20 at Charter Hall, Nairobi.

The championship, which brings together nine teams from cities around the east, central and southern Africa region, will attract a total of over 100 boxers who will feature in 11 weight categories.

The Competition will also be used as part of the Kenyatta Day celebrations.

Nairobi's Amateur Boxing Association branch chairman, George Macharia, confirmed that Nairobi, Dar es salam, Kampala, Kigali, Tanga, Moshi, Lusaka and Kitwe will field their fighters.

Macharia was speaking after receiving the Seychelles' national amateur boxing team which stopped over in Nairobi on their way back home from Cairo where they competed in the International Amateur Boxing Association's invitational championship.

The Seychelles team of eight boxers, two coaches and the president Kenneth Nallentamby of the Seychelles Amateur Boxing association which went to Egypt as part of its build up programme ahead of the All Africa Games in Algiers Algeria will be pitching camp at the Police Depot in Mathare.

Nallentamby said Seychelles which lies in Zone seven having South Africa, Namibia, Madagascar, Reunion Islands and Zimbabwe will be taking part for the first time in a Zone five invitations championship and they want to use the event as a preparatory tourney for the selection of its team to Algiers pan African games. Prior to their departure on Wednesday, the team will have a build up contest at the Bora Bora club in Kawangware against a Nairobi select squad on Saturday.

Nairobi which finished second in last year's championship in Kampala, Uganda, are aiming for the title as host and will announce its squad after the end of its league early October. NPABA secretary Steve Gacheru who is also the national organising secretary for ABA of Kenya announced plans to have a coaches, referee and judges seminar in Nanyuki from September 13-22.
