Farmers in Wakiso district refer to Upland rice as Mukyeri gwa Vice President literally meaning the Vice President's rice. This is because of Prof Gilbert Bukenya's initiative to promote the new rice, which is fast spreading.
"When the Vice president Prof. Bukenya first told us about upland rice, I thought he was joking and did not see the possibility of rice growing in uplands. I grew up seeing rice being grown only in wetlands and here he (Bukenya) was telling us about how rice can grow in a dry area," reminisces Mr Edward Mbogo, a resident of Busuju village in Kakiri sub-county, Wakiso District.
