Ghana: Assist in the Successful Implementation of FCUBE

Albert Nana Asante, Obuasi

21 September 2006

OPINION LEADERS in the various communities in the country have been reminded that they have a role to play in ensuring that all children of school going age are enrolled in school.

Mr. Joseph Onyinah, the Obuasi Municipal Director of Education who gave the reminder, said it was only when they played that role that they would be assisting in the successful implementation of the Free Compulsory Universal Basic Education (FCUBE).

Mr. Onyinah was speaking at a meeting with teachers and opinion leaders as part of the celebration of this year's 'First Day at School' at Gyimiso Kakraba on Tuesday. The day was also celebrated at Adaase, Apikikooko and Bediem all in the Obuasi Municipality.

The Government, last year introduced the 'First Day at School' to stimulate both parents and pupils to ensure that children do not only attend school, but get retained.

Mr. Onyinah, who was accompanied by Officers of the Municipal Education Office, including the Assistant Director in charge of Supervision, Mr. Ntim Jakari interacted with the children and feted them with biscuits and fruit drinks. He also presented to them school books and 'First Day at School' hats.

He charged the opinion leaders to see to it that the children, who have just been admitted, attended school regularly since the future of the country belongs to them.

The Municipal Director of Education entreated the teachers not to forget that the sustainability of this day rests on them as the interest or otherwise of the children in school depended on them.

He stressed that the introduction of the Capitation Grant and the School Feeding Programme were all interventions, which Government had introduced to improve basic education delivery in the country.

He therefore used the occasion to advise parents, whose wards were of school-going age and were still at home, to take advantage of the Capitation Grant for a better future of their children.
