Ghana: 5 Withdraw From District Level Elections in Obuasi

THE 2004 Best Assemblyman in the Obuasi Municipality and incumbent assembly member for Brahabebome and low coast electoral area, Mr. Francis Atta Agyapong has availed himself for re-election in the upcoming district level elections.

Mr. Agyapong who was presented a 14-inch colour television by the Obuasi Municipal Assembly as his prize in an interview with The Chronicle said his desire to contest for the second time was in response to the demand of the people of the area.

"I decided not to go for a second term but after considering the numerous calls from my people to continue with my good works, I could not turn them down", he stressed.

Expressing his views on the postponement of the election, which was originally scheduled for September 12, this year, Mr. Agyapong said "I am not worried at all as I am prepared for what ever date".

The 2004 best assemblyman in Obuasi said he was not afraid of the stiff competition that awaits him come September 26, more especially battling it out against his closest contender in the last election, Madam Juliana Anokye Frimpong.

Enumerating some of his achievements during his four-year term, Mr. Agyapong said the area witnessed the building of a new modern school and provision of street lights.

He said the construction new packing lot, new Vault chamber and new primary school were all under his tenure and called on the electorates to vote for him to complete his unfinished agenda.

He advised all contestants in the municipality to avoid insult during their electioneering campaigns.

On her part Madam Juliana Anokye Frimpong said she was confident of wining the election this time as the people now see her as the right person for the area.

She conceded that the election was going to be a keenly contested one adding "I will appeal to the electorates to vote fo r m e as you have tested a male candidate".

Meanwhile, five people including one female have withdrew their candidature from the elections in the Obuasi Municipality.

In a telephone interview with the Electoral Boss here Obuasi, Mr. Fraincis Addai Boateng; he said the five gave personal reasons for their resignation.

He gave the names of the five as, Messrs Abdulai Ayub, K. A Fokuo, Thomas Ofosu, Micheal K. Buadum and Madam Grace Sarpongmaa with Kokoteasua, Gausu-north, Odumasi, Ahansoyewodea and Brahabebome-low coast being their electoral areas.

With the five now out of the race, 98 candidates, comprising of 11 females and 87 males are running for the 30 electoral areas in the municipality. One candidate is running unopposed.
