Zimbabwe: Avian Flu - Govt On Alert

28 September 2006

Harare — THE Government is alert to the dangers of avian flu, a bird disease that can be transmitted to humans.

Health and Child Welfare Minister Dr David Parirenyatwa said avian influenza (H5N1), now reported to be in Egypt and Djibouti, continued to pose a risk to Southern Africa.

"The disease can be spread by migratory birds and other contaminated articles. The migratory birds can then spread it to domestic birds, which can subsequently spread the disease to humans through contact and eating," he said.

Statistics released by the World Health Organisation on Monday show that from September 16 to date, 51 of the 67 confirmed cases in Indonesia were fatal.

The Government had strengthened the routine monitoring of seasoned avian influenza through its surveillance system.

The Government safety campaign brings together veterinary officers and medical doctors.

"Government has established an integrated multi-sectoral team which developed a very comprehensive plan as well as the standard operating procedures.

"People should not panic as there is good co-operation between the veterinarians, medical doctors and the many stakeholders who are working so well together in making sure the disease is controlled should it occur in Zimbabwe," he said.

Chairman of the Taskforce on Avian Influenza and the Human Pandemic Influenza, Dr Stuart Hargreaves, said it was anticipated that a national awareness campaign be cascaded to lower levels once funding was made available.

"We cannot be complacent on the issue because there are threats of illegal trade of poultry, though the risks are low.

"Communication with various communities would be ideal so that people get aware of the disease in the event that a large number of poultry deaths occurs," he said.
