Kampala — HOIMA hospital is overwhelmed by abortion. The medical superintendent, Dr. Emanuel Moro, on Thursday said despite insufficient facilities, they register at least three abortion cases daily.
"We are overwhelmed by the rate of abortion. Unfortunately most of them come when they have already developed complications. We need government's intervention through sensitisation," Moro told journalists at parliament.
Earlier, while appearing before the public accounts committee, Moro told MPs that the hospital could not handle most cases due to lack of facilities. He said there was need to equip up-country hospitals with all the facilities they need to enable them handle some of the cases that are referred to Mulago.
He said the hospital still uses some structures constructed in 1910 to handle over 500 patients daily.
"Our out-patient room, x-ray room, the theatre and the maternity rooms are too small for us to handle the cases that we receive. Unfortunately, the hospital does not receive capital development funds. We are having problems. We need government's intervention," said Moro, flanked by hospital administrator Jackson Kisubi.
