Kampala — Ugandan hip-hop music could be set to gain international recognition. A joint album featuring top local hip-hop artistes and a Belgian hip-hop crew called Indigenous, has been released on a Kinky Star Records label in Belgium.
Local artistes featuring in this project are Krazy Native, Maurice Kirya, Abramz, Sylvester and Lyrical G.
Indigenous artistes include rappers Static and Spok and vocalists Emilie and Leen.
Originally, hip-hop music was envisaged as a genre that could only be done in English.
Today most local hip-hop artistes prefer singing in their native languages.
This recording features three tracks, done in Luganda, English and Flemish. The songs, which include Locals and Natives, Wanika and Wansi Wagulu were recorded and produced in Uganda by a Belgian producer, Glue, who has a mobile recording studio. The mixing was done at the Assembly Line in Ghent and mastered at Foon Mastering Centre in Lier, Belgium.
"Over 3,000 copies have already been sold in Belgium. Let me hope that this music will also be received well here," said Static, who has been in Uganda to promote their music for the past three weeks.
