Kampala — OLYMPIC 400m and 200m legend Michael Johnson arrives in Kampala tomorrow on a humanitarian mission.
He will be visiting the Laureus Sports supported Community Based Aids Programme (COBAP) in Nakulabye.
COBAP is an innovative programme that addresses HIV/AIDS awareness, poverty, life skills, illiteracy, delinquency and health issues through the use of sport. It provides healthcare, rehabilitation and shelter for people who have been affected by HIV/AIDS.
Johnson is in Kenya today where he will visit the Mathare Youth Sports Association (MYSA) in Nairobi.
The 39-year-old will visit MYSA with World Cup winner Marcel Desailly and three time Olympic gold medallist Kipchoge Keino.
Laureus is an organisation that uses sports as a tool for social change and funds projects across the world.
In Uganda, he will visit the COBAP project facilities and also watch a village boxing exhibition match.
Johnson is remembered for denying Uganda's Davis Kamoga twice in the Atlanta Olympics (1996) and Athens World Athletics Championships (1997). He won gold as Kamoga got bronze and silver.
He is one of the most distinctive sprinters in the history of track and field with his powerful and upright, but short-paced stride pattern.
