Africa: Let's Stop These Ozone Depleting Conferences

Nairobi — A minor but significant detail seems to have been lost in all the rhetoric at the United Nations Conference on Climate Change that took place in Nairobi recently: the 6,000 or so delegates attending the conference may have contributed more to global warming in a fortnight than the entire city of Nairobi does in a year. This is because most arrived here in one of the most climate-changing forms of transport, the airplane.

ACCORDING TO the Intergovernmental Panel of Climate Change (IPPC), the world's 16,000 airliners are responsible for 3.5 per cent of man-made global warming and could account for 15 per cent of global warming by 2050.
