Nigeria: Senate Kills Bill Giving Obasanjo Law-Making Powers

Abuja — The Senate, yesterday, rejected a bill seeking to give powers to the executive arm of government to periodically review the laws of the federation. The bill was derailed following the submissions of the Senator Oserheinmen Osunbor-led Committee on Judiciary which kicked against the provisions of the bill on the basis that it encroached on the powers of the National Assembly.

The bill titled, "A Bill for An Act to Provide for the Periodic Review of the Laws of the Federation of Nigeria and for Matters Connected Therewith" was introduced to the Senate in 2004 and passed through second reading on Thursday October 20, 2005.
