Kampala — CIVIL society organisations in Uganda have protested the legalisation of same sex marriages in South Africa (SA).

The chairperson of the Political Parties platform, Emmanuel Tumusiime, yesterday said the move would create a cultural and economic clash on the continent.

Tumusiime, Pastor Martin Sempa, and the People's Development Party chief, Abed Bwanika, braved the morning downpour and went to the South African High commission offices at Nakasero to present their protest.

Meeting the First Secretary for Political Affairs, Adriaan Du Pisanie, Tumusiime, the president of the Forum for Integrity in Leadership, said, "We feel betrayed by the SA government. Homosexuality is evil and against humanity. It is sad that they have decided to pay Africa back in that form after helping them out during apartheid."

He asked Pisanie to deliver the petition to SA President Thabo Mbeki, the speaker of the South African parliament, the speaker of the African parliament and the Secretary General of the african National congress.

Sempa said, "If no action is taken, we shall organise a cultural and economic embargo against South Africa."
