Luanda — At least 3,125 complaints of violence against women were lodged with the seven Luanda's counselling centres of the ruling MPLA party women wing (OMA), from January to October 2006.

The information was released Thursday by Luanda's provincial secretary of the Organisation, Eulália Rocha, during a lecture called "Women's Problem, Violence and HIV/AIDS", as part of the 16 days of activism against gender violence.

Isilda Neves, a lecturer to the event, said violence against women has brought negative consequences as prostitution, sexual transmitted diseases, post-traumatic stress, depression, anxiety, including death.

To respond to these problems, Isilda Neves mentioned the need for integration of the cases of sexual and domestic violence, through concerned networks, among other methods that protect women.

She also disclosed that since 1985, 19,227 cases of AIDS were recorded in the country. Of that figure 10,153 are women, aged between 20 and 49 years old.
