Lagos — Women in Colleges of Education (WICE) across the country met in Lagos recently to fashion out ways of making more women and youth Information and Communications Technology (ICT) compliant. Participants at the 11th annual conference of WICE, held at the Adeniran Ogunsanya College of Education, Oto/Ijanikin, Lagos, called on public spirited individuals to assist women and youths in their quest for ICT skills. The out-going President of the association, Mrs. Lucy Padung, while recounting her stewardship, noted that her association has over the years, took tremendous strides in empowering its members and the youth.
This, she said, was through conferences, seminars and workshops conducted by tested members and other invited guests from all over the world, adding that most of these conference papers were now published in the WICE Journal, JOWICE. She described this effort as a good example of the preparedness of the women to promote and defend the right of the girl-child to good education in Nigeria.
She stressed that WICE was not a labour union but rather, an association of women in colleges of education in Nigeria, which aims at bringing together female staff from various colleges to make their contributions towards national issues, especially as they affect women and children.
Padung attributed the success of her exco to God and the good foundation led by past leaders as well as support given to her by most members who she noted, now have good sense of belonging to the association and therefore, willing to give service to their communities.
She stated however, that like every other organisation, WICE has been faced with some nagging problems among which are finance, transportation services, lack of office accommodation, especially in Abuja, as well as computers and its accessories. This, she said, would enable WICE to make greater achievements toward national growth and development.
