South Africa: Tokyo Eyes Presidency

Johannesburg — AFRICAN National Congress-aligned businessman Tokyo Sexwale this week sold a portion of his mining company Mvelaphanda Resources and started the process of scaling down his day to day involvement in the business, a move that has led to speculation that the former premier of Gauteng plans a return to politics.

A political comeback for Sexwale, possibly as a candidate to succeed President Thabo Mbeki, has long been rumoured. But Sexwale's minders have steadfastly denied this, and until recently he has taken no overt steps to suggest any interest in the presidency.
