Eritrea: President Isaias Reiterates That Eritrea Did Not Send Troops to Somalia

23 December 2006

Asmara — In an interview he gave to Al-Jazeera Television yesterday, President Isaias Afwerki reiterated that Eritrea did not send troops to Somalia.

Stating that the Eritrea has no reason to send troops to Somalia and that the Somalis do not need Eritrean troops to defend their country, the President underlined that reports alleging that Eritrea has sent troops to Somalia is unfounded and is meant to cover up the Ethiopian regime's open interference and invasion of Somalia.

Pointing out that those quarters talking about the alleged deployment of Eritrean troops into Somalia have no proof at all to back up their allegation, President Isaias elaborated that given the chance, the Somali people have the competence and potential to resolve their affairs without foreign interference.

Noting that the main cause of the prevailing problem in Somalia is the interference of external forces, especially the aggression of the Ethiopian regime, the President underscored that if the Somali issue is at all to be resolved genuinely the Somali people should be given the chance to resolve their problems themselves.
