Zimbabwe: Kawara Laid to Rest

29 December 2006

Harare — A LIBERATION war hero, Makanika Jojo Kawara, who died on Saturday after a long battle with diabetes was laid to rest on Wednesday at his Katenhe Village home in Hurungwe.

The late nationalist was initially expected to be interred at the Mashonaland West provincial heroes' acre in Chinhoyi yesterday but this was changed at the request of the family.

At the time of his death, Cde Kawara was a Zanu-PF National Consultative Assembly member. According to Tavaena Kawara, his son, Cde Kawara was diabetic, adding that his condition had worsened during the last four weeks forcing him to miss the Ninth Zanu-PF Annual People's Conference at Goromonzi.

Cde Kawara was buried with full military honours at a ceremony attended by Mashonaland West Governor Cde Nelson Samkange, Politburo member Cde Ignatious Chombo and several other high-ranking Government and ruling party officials.

Cde Samkange hailed the veteran nationalist for his exemplary role in the revolution which brought about independence in 1980.

He encouraged the youths to draw inspiration from the life of the late nationalist.

The governor took a swipe at people who still thought Zimbabwe's economy could not be turned around without whites in the driving seat.
