Mogadishu — One of the clans in the Somali capital Mogadishu has passed its arms, including a pick-up truck mounted with an anti-aircraft gun and about eleven AK 47 rifles, to a location in north Mogadishu.
Only a day is left for the deadline that Prime Minister Ali Mohammed Gedi announced all weapons in the hands of ordinary people should be brought to locations specified by the government.
The clan elders have also brought 20 militiamen armed with automatic weapons to join the government recruits.
Salad Ali Jele, the assistant defense minister, who was at the arms collection point, told Shabelle that tomorrow would be the last day for the Somalis to bring their arms.
"We are telling the people that anyone who does not bring his weapon to the areas stated by the government, we will forcefully disarm him", he said.
Isse Mohammed Hussein, one of the militiamen, told Shabelle that he was giving up his gun.
"I am surrendering my gun this afternoon because I want to be trained and I want to be a government soldier", he said.
For the three days the government said weapons should be surrendered, today has become the first day that one of the Somali clans began passing their arms to the government positions.
