Nigeria: NPA Scam - 'EFCC to Reinvestigate Bode George'

The chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission [EFCC], Nuhu Ribadu said yesterday that he will reinvestigate the alleged financial scam at the Nigerian Port Authority [NPA] during the tenure of the Deputy National Chairman of the PDP, chief Olabode George as chairman.

Ribadu who spoke in Lagos at the 3rd Chief Gani Fawehinmi lecture entitled "Fawehinmism-Corruption and the Survival of the Nigerian Nation", said his commission will reopen the investigation as soon as it is armed with the requisite facts.

He however dismissed criticism from a section of the public that his commission was afraid to investigate George due to his strong attachment to the President Olusegun Obasanjo.

He said no one, as far as his commission is concerned, is above the law adding that the EFCC will also commence investigation into other cases that have generated public outcry.

Ribadu, who expressed the desire of his commission to 'fight corruption tooth and nail' in the country said the malaise is the major problem afflicting Nigeria today.

He carpeted lawyers for not doing enough in the crusade against corruption and bad governance in the country.

According to him "I make bold to say at this point that grand corruption is the major human rights problem of our time and lawyers have been missing in nation in the articulation of the issues, and articulation of alternative pathways out of the present quagmire".

Ribadu also wondered why lawyers in the country always rushed to defend criminals and corrupt elements under the cover of rule of law. He cited the example of how 'the President of the Nigerian Bar Association, Olisa Agbakoba, SAN, had rushed to Plateau state to scuttle the impeachment move against Governor Dariye."

He further recalled how the members of the Nigerian Bar Association contributed to the fall of General Muhammadu Buhari regime, adding that the regime's fall paved way for the 'corrupt administration of Babangida who they ultimately benefited from.'
