Uganda: Acholi MPs Seek UN Help On Land Issues

ACHOLI members of Parliament yesterday asked the United Nations and the international community to intervene in the thorny land matters in northern Uganda as internally displaced persons resettle in their villages.

The MPs under their umbrella body, the Acholi Parliamentary Group told reporters yesterday at Parliament that the conflict has rendered their people vulnerable.

"We call upon the international communities and the UN in particular to help us see that the land rights of our people are protected. It is their only hope for the future," the chairman of the group Livingstone Okello Okello said.

He said any talks about investment should be postponed until the people are peacefully resettled. Mr Okello Okello said the Uganda government can hardly handle the resettlement of more than 1.6 million IDPs without external help.
