South Africa: Selebi Under Fire for Rape Report 'Bungle'

Cape Town — National police commissioner Jackie Selebi is under fire again -- this time for using an "incorrect" report to exonerate Pretoria police from charges that they beat up a prostitute and threw her in the back of a van.

On Friday Selebi dismissed reports of the attack on the prostitute as an "absolute thumb suck", saying she had not been beaten but had been sprayed with pepper spray. The woman was reported to have made a statement yesterday to the officer investigating the incident in which she claims to have been attacked twice by police.
