Lagos — The strategic importance of the Sam Mbakwe International Cargo Airport, Owerri, has come to the fore especially since August 2006 when the Port Harcourt Airport was shut down for repair work. All flights meant for Port Harcourt are diverted or re-focused to Owerri hence there is appreciable heavy air traffic at the Sam Mbakwe Airport.

The near congestion at the airport particularly during the last quarter of 2006 however goes contrary to what is on the ground there. The Owerri airport is yearning for urgent Federal Government attention in the area of equipment and expansion.
