Botswana: Airport Hoax Man Gets Bail

The man who caused a scare at the Sir Seretse Khama Airport last Saturday was granted bail by Village Chief Magistrate Nelson Bopa yesterday. Callan Hinze was released on condition that he should not go within 200 metres of the airport; he should surrender his travel documents to Sir Seretse Khama Airport police; and he must notify the police before leaving Botswana.

In addition, he will report to the police every two weeks. The prosecution led by Sergeant Patrick Mogobye did not oppose bail and the trial date has been set for February 15 when the state will call four witnesses. The 22-year-old Hinze from Zimbabwe has been charged with common nuisance after he brought operations at the Sir Seretse Khama Airport to a standstill by claiming that the morning flight to Johannesburg was in danger. Several flights were cancelled and the bomb squad from the Botswana Defence Force (BDF) had to be called in to check the plane. It turned out that the claim was a hoax.
