Nairobi — THE ENGLISH CALL IT mesquite or honey mesquite; to the Boran of Isiolo it is Algarob, while the Somalis in Garissa call it Mathenge after a Mr Mathenge, who was said to have been the main player in the propagation of Prosopis juliflora.
Mathenge is an evergreen deciduous thorny shrub that matures at a height of 12 metres and, depending on local conditions, it grows to a diameter of 1.2 metres.
