Africa: CSOS Undergo Good Governance Training

20 February 2007

Lagos — The Les Aspin Center have unveiled plans to conduct a training program on anti-corruption and good governance for civil society leaders from Ghana, Nigeria and Mali.

The program, according to sources, which is scheduled to take place between May and August, is part of a capacity building training which the Center conducts yearly for civil society leaders from Eastern and Western Africa in Washington, DC, USA.

The training will involve a total of 18 participants from Ghana, Nigeria and Mali. Participants will include junior to middle level personnel of government and civil society organisations which work in the area of anti-corruption and the administration of justice, personnel from local government, representatives of human rights and of women's development organisations.

Other participants are expected to include personnel from the print and electronic media, as well as personnel from other sectors with work directly related to the promotion of integrity and accountability in the public and private sectors.

One of the principal aims of the program is to train participants to understand the multi-dimensional nature of corruption and how to manage its impact. Participants are expected to also learn how ethics infrastructures function to improve integrity and accountability systems in the private and public domains.

Further, participants will develop and implement country-specific strategies for the building of integrity and accountability systems in their respective countries.

The program, according to reports, is to be conducted in three phases: phase 1 - orientation programme in Ghana; phase 2- Training, Les Aspin Center, USA; and phase 3- program conclusion and follow-up in Ghana in August.

The USAID country Missions in Ghana, Mali and Nigeria are to coordinate with the Center, to identify appropriate candidates, solicit applications and select the participants for the program, in a transparent and competitive process.
