Nairobi — Five-time World Cross-Country champion, Paul Tergat, is confident the national team to next month's World Championships in Mombasa would sweep the board.
Speaking to SportFest on Monaday, Tergat said the team picked after the national trials last Saturday was one of the best as most of the athletes were on top of their form.
"We have one of the best teams in recent times and it's time we claimed glory on our own soil. I'm confident we'll sweep medals in all the four categories," Tergat said.
He was speaking during the launch of the Anti-Corruption Torch Run at Buxton ground in Mombasa.
Tergat, who is also the world marathon record holder, is a member of the Anti-Corruption Campaign Steering Committee.
He was accompanied by former Boston city Marathon champion Moses Tanui, Joshua Chelanga and the newly crowned Sportswoman of the Year Janet Jepkosgei.
"Kenyans will most likely produce their best timings in the World Championships," Tergat said.
However, Tergat was of the opinion that the National Cross-Country Trials should have been held in Mombasa so athletes can test the course.
"The trials could have given athletes the best opportunity to test the Mombasa course and the humidity in the Coastal town. Today, I haven't even run, but you can see I'm sweating and it's morning. Imagine how the condition would be by evening," he quipped. He cautioned Athletics Kenya against moving the team to Mombasa early, saying such a move could be detrimental to athletes.
"The team should move to Mombasa at least five days prior to the race. Moving early could lead to hydration and this is likely to affect their performance during the World Championships," Tergat said.
AK had earlier said the team would move to Mombasa on March 19.
