Nairobi — Last Saturday's Tusker National Cross-Country trials provided a glimpse of the teams that will represent the country in the World Championships in Mombasa. More importantly, it brought out the possibilities that effective sponsorship, coupled with nationwide exposure could do to a major local cross-country event. As usual, the trials provided fierce competition and some tremendous battles in pursuit of the few places for Mombasa.
The record crowds that turned up to cheer the athletes as they battled for the championship team places were impressive. In recent times, attendance has been on the wane at any national championships or selection trials and it has had a downward effect on the state of local athletics.
