Gicumbi — The Mayor of Rulindo district, Justus Kangwage, has urged local leaders to put in place mechanisms in their sectors and cells to ensure food security.
Speaking to local leaders who were attending a three-day workshop in Ntarabana, Burega and Cyizuzi sectors on Saturday March 3, Kangwage, called on the leaders to sensitize the residents to build food storage facilities and fight domestic violence.
"As leaders we need to ensure that hunger is totally eliminated in our district. This can be achieved by sensitizing the residents on which crops to grow, building food storage facilities and introducing alternative sources of income. In all, we must do away with hunger," Kangwage said, calling for effective coordination and cooperation among the leaders to get the district out of hunger and poverty.
On alternative sources of income, Kagwage suggested bee keeping and asked local leaders to sensitize the residents to build bee hives.
The Mayor also called on local leaders to promote childbirth control and education in their areas of administration. "Do more sensitization of residents on childbirth control. People must produce children within their means and it's our responsibility as leaders to ensure that. We also need to ensure that every child is going to school."
Kangwage also urged the local leaders to pass on the information gained from workshops to residents, foster education and other government programs. He also cautioned them against being a hindrance in achieving the government's Vision 2020.
The workshop was organized by the Ministry of Local Government and is to take place country wide in all sectors.
The Mayor said the workshops were intended to incorporate all leaders in the Government vision so as to have a common direction leading to a common destiny which is sustainable economic development, good governance, unity and reconciliation and improved standard of living among others.
