Angola: Capanda Dam to Double Output in July

6 March 2007

Luanda — Angola's Capanda Hydroelectric Dam in northern Malanje province will duplicate its power output in July this year, with the start of two more 130 megawatt units that will reinforce the supply to the capital, Luanda.

This is as a result of the investments in the construction of new electricity transportation lines.

Thus, the new Capanda-Lucala-Luanda line will convey 400 kilowatts, against the existing 230 that will branch to reinforce the Capanda-Cambambe and Cambambe-Luanda systems.

The work has an overall cost of Usd 218 million, Angop learned.

Two other lines, Capanda-Ndalatando and Cambambe-Luanda, are being built under Chinese funding.

The decision to increment the supply of power follows a rising demand being recorded since the country attained peace in April 2002.

The rise in the Gross Domestic Product and consequent gradual increase in the number of consumers are other factors boosting the need for more supply.

The construction of the Capanda-Lucala-Luanda transportation line became feasible through the increment in the production of electricity from the Hydroelectric Dam.

In order to implement the project, the Ministry of Energy and Water signed a contract with a consortium between the builder "Norberto Odebrecht", the Spanish "Elencor S.A" and "Isolux Ingeniera".

Another two power transportation lines, Capanda-Ndalatando and Cambambe-Luanda, are currently being built with funds from China.

The Capanda Hydroelectric Dam, with a capacity to generate 520 megawatts, was inaugurated by Angolan head of State, Jose Eduardo dos Santos, in November 2005.
