Tanzania: Abandon Obsolete Customs, Meru Leader Urges

Arusha — The traditional leader of Meru ethnic group, Mshili Robert Kitomari (81) has urged Tanzanians to abandon outdated customs that are now posing a threat to them.

Mr. Kitomari was speaking during a workshop aimed at educating traditional leaders on various aspects of societal development . The workshop was held from 5th to 9th March, at Coffee House, Tengeru. It was attended by 37 participants from Arusha Region.

He said that through education his tribe has made strides in waging war against female genital mutilation, inheritance of widows and stigmatization of HIV/AIDS patients.

"Myself I am ready to expose anyone who contravenes modern values that safeguard our health and well being ." said Mr. Kitomari.

He said that he is against the tendency of inheriting widows because such practice fuels HIV/AIDS.

The Project Co-ordinator of the Elders and Retired Officers Association in Arusha (CHAWAMA), Mr. Felix Urassa said that there is need for traditional leaders to be well informed of various development , health and social matters so that they can be able to lead and make sound decisions.

CHAWAMA facilitated the workshop in collarboration with stakeholders such as people in the fight against AIDS Tanzania (WAMATA).
