Nigeria: Revitalising the Health Sector

Lagos — Not long ago, two leading presidential candidates in the forthcoming general elections - Vice President Atiku Abubakar of the Action Congress (AC) and Alhaji Umar Musa Yar'Adua of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) - were flown abroad to receive medical treatment, all in less than one week. Both incidents dramatise the sorry state of the nation's health structures and administration.

The signs of decay in the medical institutions abound everywhere. Recently, for over three weeks, medical doctors in government hospitals went on strike. Without doubt, that action claimed many lives, especially those patients who could not afford medicare in private clinics and hospitals.
