Zimbabwe: Police Intensify Probe Into Attack On Chamisa

Harare — POLICE have intensified investigations into the mysterious daylight attack on MDC legislator for Kuwadzana Mr Nelson Chamisa, who underwent an eye operation at a private hospital in Harare yesterday.

Mr Chamisa was reportedly set upon by unknown assailants on Sunday morning as he disembarked from his vehicle at the Harare International Airport parking lot. He was on his way to catch a flight to Brussels to attend the African, Caribbean and Pacific Group of States-European Union Joint Parliamentary Assembly.

Police chief spokesman Assistant Commissioner Wayne Bvudzijena said they managed to take pictures of the legislator on Monday evening at the Avenues Clinic where he is admitted.

"We took photographs of Mr Chamisa and we will use them as part of our investigations," said Asst Comm Bvudzijena.

Speaking in a telephone interview, Mr Chamisa told The Herald that doctors had operated on his eye, which he said was badly injured and could not see after the assault.

"I had an eye operation this morning and preliminary indications show that it was severely damaged. Right now doctors are observing my fractured skull," said the legislator.

"I am in great pain right now and you are actually the second person that I have talked to today after speaking to my wife."

He said it was not true that he had imposed a selective ban on journalists wishing to interview him in hospital and report on his condition.

Mr Chamisa said he had barred all local and foreign journalists as well as friends to allow him more time to recuperate.

"Journalists who managed to take my photographs did so while I was at Dandaro Clinic where I was initially admitted," he said.
