Nigeria: The NEITI Bill

Lagos — The passage of a bill for an Act to establish the Nigerian Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative, NEITI, might be the crowning glory over the dark days of lack of accountability in the extractive sector. Prior to now, an accurate revenue data of income from the sector by the country had been very difficult to get. All the figures brandished were approximations.

NEITI has been given legal recognition by the Senate and this will boost its operational efficiency and effectiveness. NEITI has made impactful inroad into making extractive industries to be accountable and transparent in their dealings with the government. It would take more than mere legislation to see this through.
