Botswana: Lay-Off, Nkate Warns Teachers

The Minister of Education Jacob, Nkate, has warned leaders of teachers' unions to stop poking their noses in issues that do not concern them. Speaking at a media briefing, Nkate said that he has a problem with teachers' union leaders criticising government policies that have anything to do with education matters.

"I do not see it as any of their business in criticising policies like privatisation. Even though they have unionised, they are still public servants and are guided by statutes and regulations that they have to comply with," Nkate said. He asserted that he does not have difficulty with teachers' organisations unionising. But he added that since the organisations unionised, he has realised that their leaders have become very outspoken.
