Eritrea/Angola: Players Seek Political Asylum in Angola

Luanda — Six players of the Eritrean national soccer team that lost on Sunday, here, to Angola by 1-6, asked for political asylum at the delegation of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) in Angola.

This was announced Tuesday by various local radio stations quoting UNHCR.

According to the broadcasting stations, the aforementioned players refused to travel with their caravan back home on Monday evoking reasons of instability and human right violations in their country.

This is the first case of its kind recorded in Angola. The game that was played at Cidadela national stadium was for the third round (Group F) qualifier to the African Cup of Nations (CAN-2008), in Ghana.
