Mauritius: Those Common Hunger Strikes !

Port Louis — It has become a common feature. After the victims of the sale by levy and those of the Development Works Corporation (DWC) made redundant, it is now the turn of "taxi malere" to go on a hunger strike. In short, each time people feel the government is not listening to their recriminations, they "simply" resort to a hunger strike.

Hunger strikes are indeed a last resort solution to make unheard voices heard by society and particularly by the government. There is no doubt that this method is the result of a total distress of people who feel they have tried everything possible to be heard by the authorities but have totally neglected. It is an extreme measure, as people are risking their lives. And this is why such a measure should not be used non-stop.
