Uganda: Ease of Doing Business to Be Assessed

Kampala — A team of World Bank officials are in the country to prepare a report about the ease of doing business in Uganda, writes John Odyek.

Justin Yap, the private sector development specialist of the World Bank, said every year, the bank prepares the report, which ranks countries.

In the September 2006 report, Uganda was 107th out 175 countries. Kenya was 83rd, Tanzania 142nd and Rwanda 158th.

Yap said the doing business database, (www.doingbusiness.org), provides objective measures of business regulations and their enforcement.

The ten topics covered during the survey include starting a business, dealing with licences, employing workers, registering properties, getting credit, protecting investors, paying taxes, cross border trade, enforcing a contract and closing a business.
