Ghana: Hosting of XX Commonwealth Games

THE ABUJA 2014 Commonwealth Games Bid Committee has made a strong presentation regarding their readiness for the hosting of the 20th edition of the Commonwealth Games in Accra.

And even with the withdrawal of one of the prospective candidates, Halifax, Canada, the Nigerians still face stiff opposition from European city, Glasgow who were in the country a few months ago for their presentation.

But the Nigerians are sure they have what it takes to host a successful tournament should they receive the nod.

In a press conference at the Ghana Olympic Committee (GOC) secretariat in Accra yesterday, the secretary of the Abuja 2014 Commonwealth Games Bid Committee, Dr A.T. Yusuf indicated that "We are not bidding to host on sentiments, but we think it high time Africa hosted it for the first time."

Dr. Yusuf, brimming with optimism said "We have all it takes to the hosting of a successful competition. The facilities are ready. All we have to do is to upgrade them."

Among the reasons the Nigerians presented for hosting a hitch-free tournament are that Nigeria is a loyal, faithful and committed member of the Commonwealth, has a 60 thousand seat capacity athletics Stadium in Abuja which is a tourist delight, a new Games village and other training facilities, two fully equipped international broadcast centres, has gross experience in sports hosting and the biggest market for investors.

The leader of the delegation, Sani Badamasi stated that they have put strategic measures in place to ensure that they take hosting of the competition to the next level.

"We have purposed to tour all the 71 participating countries, and indications are that we are the likely host of the forthcoming competition," he noted.

The first vice president of the GOC, Mr. Frank Appiah wished the team well and promised his outfit's support when the need arises.

The Abuja Bid Committee's next country of visit is Sierra Leone where they will spend a day or two and then move to The Gambia.
