Kampala — THE government is planning to close at least 1,000 non governmental organizations operating in northern Uganda, Daily Monitor has learnt.
According to our sources in high government offices, security operatives from the Internal Security Organisation (ISO) and Military Intelligence have already been briefed and dispatched to the north to carry out what authorities call a detailed analysis of NGOs.
Sources say government accuses some NGOs of conducting their business in an unbecoming manner. The government has also held meetings with some leading NGOs and put clear its intentions to deregister a number of NGOs and Community Based Organizations (CBOs).
According to NGO officials Daily Monitor spoke to, there are more than 5,000 NGOs in the country with northern Uganda hosting the majority. There are also more than 20,000 CBOs with northern hosting the biggest number.
The Minister of State for Relief and Disaster Preparedness Musa Ecweru was tasked to implement government's agenda against the northern based NGOs.
