Nigeria: NLC Rejects Yar'Adua's Victory

Abuja — Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), yesterday said it could not accept outcome of the Presidential elections and the emergence of the Peoples Democratic Party(PDP)'s candidate, Alhaji Umaru Musa Yar'Adua as the President-elect, because it was predicated on flawed electoral process.

"The NLC is convinced that the long-term interests of our nation will be better served by rejecting these elections. Congress therefore, commits itself to working with broad-based interest group to fashion a way out of what is clearly a national political crisis," it said.

The congress said the result of the elections as declared last Monday by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) is a product of flawed electoral process which was programmed to fail.

The Nigeria Labour Congress finds it difficult to accept the outcome of the presidential elections and the emergence of Alhaji Yar'Adua. This is not because we have any personal disagreement with him, but the fact that he is a beneficiary of a fundamentally flawe electoral process which was programmed to fail."

It said the Presidential and National Assembly elections just like the state elections were characterised by "late voting and non-appearance of electoral officials in many parts of the country, severe shortage of ballot papers and declaration of results even in places where elections were not held."

Other shortcomings of the polls identified by NLC include under-age voting, voter intimidation, snatching and stuffing of ballot boxes and general subversion of the people's will.

In a statement signed by the General Secretary of NLC, Mr John Odah, the congress said its central working committee at its recent meeting, expressed lack of confidence in the capacity of INEC Chairman, Professor Maurice Iwu to conduct credible elections based on the despicable conduct of the elections.

The statement accused INEC of indulging in self-inflicted logistic problems by distributing materials at late hours and printing of ballot papers without the logo of some political parties.

"Generally, the INEC, under a self-glorifying Professor Iwu, was an unmitigated disaster," the congress said.

NLC also blamed the Federal Government for misuse of the armed forces, the Police and other security agencies during the elections.

It described as campaign of calumny and attempt to cover up its misdeeds, the Federal Government's accusation against the Senate President, Ken Nnamani, adding that the intention was to reduce Senate's capacity to intervene in the crisis.
