South Africa: Petrol Price to Increase By 34 Cents

Thapelo Sakoana

26 April 2007

Pretoria — Another hike is looming for the petrol price, which is set to increase by between 34 and 35 cents per litre from next Wednesday.

This follows a rise of between 68 and 69 cents per litre in the petrol price in March.

The Department of Minerals and Energy announced Wednesday that the hike was a result of an increase in international product prices of petrol, diesel and illuminating paraffin.

Another economic factor that led to the hike was that the average Rand/US Dollar exchange rate strengthened between 30 March and 24 April, as compared to the previous period.

The wholesale price of diesel will also go up by 30 cents a litre for 0.05 percent sulphur diesel and again 30 cents for 0.005 percent sulphur diesel.

Paraffin will also go up by 18 cents per litre and its single maximum national retail price will increase by 24 cents a litre.

The single maximum national retail price for illuminating paraffin would be changed monthly from the first Wednesday of each month and be promulgated in the Government Gazette.

With effect from next Wednesday to 5 June, the single maximum national retail price for illuminating paraffin will be 626, 0 c/l compared to 602 c/l from 4 April to 2 May this year, an increase of 24 cents a litre.

The Minister of Minerals and Energy, Buyelwa Sonjica has also approved an increase of 4, 04 percent in rail transport tariffs with effect from 4 April this year.

Transport tariff increases in C-Zones were not implemented in April 2007 in anticipation of the decision by the National Energy Regulator of South Africa (NERSA) on Petronet's application for an increase on the tariffs of petroleum pipeline transport.

NERSA has not granted Petronet such an increase.

However, the rail transport tariffs applicable onwards in C-Zones would be increased and implemented into petrol and diesel price structures with effect from next Wednesday.

The retail pump prices in zones 6C, 12C, 62C, 17C and 67C will increase by an additional 1, 0 c/l.

The new transport tariffs in C-Zones with effect from 2 May 2007 will be available on the Department of Minerals and Energy's website: www.dme.gov.za
