Liberia: Woman, 30, Kills Her Baby

AllAfrica aggregates reports from Africa's news media. This is an article from the Liberian press. It is not a report by AllAfrica.

Reports from Gbarnga, Bong County, speak of a barbaric behavior on the part of a 30 years old woman who allegedly killed her 2 day-old child, without taking into account the nine months pain she bored.

The lifeless body of the child was discovered by police in an abandoned well in Totota, Bong County. The woman, Haja Dorley, is said to have consented to the act and is presently in police custody in Gbarnga awaiting court trial, having first been charged with "willful murder."

She is said to have committed the act on Monday, April 30, 2007 in Totota, Bong County. Totota is one of the many towns in Bong County and is situated on the Monrovia-Gbagnga Highway.

Police in Totota first apprehended Madam Dorley and turned over to the central office in Gbarnga, where is presently being detained. According to our correspondent, Madam Dorley killed her own child on grounds that she is facing hardship.

Her boyfriend, the father of the baby, according to her, is in Guinea and is not providing any assistance since she gave birth. At such, she told police in Gbarnga that she did not have anyone to help her in taking care of the baby.

It is not known as to how she carried on the act which according to observers is against decency and civility, but there are speculations that she might have suffocated the baby to death.

Meanwhile, the Police have constituted a 15-man jury to pre-investigate the alleged murderer before she can be turned over to the court for prosecution.

Observers are however wondering over the constitution of such committee whereby the woman has already consented to act. Such killings are said to be commonplace in Bong County, predominantly occupy by Kpelle tribe.
