South Africa: Chinese And French Items Shine in Antique Auction

Johannesburg — AN EARLY Chinese spice cabinet, seldom seen in South African auctions, and a whimsical 19th century French farm table and two benches were among the unusual and attractive pieces of furniture offered at the Westgate Walding Auctioneers decorative and fine arts sale in Sandown this week.

The Chinese cabinet has an intricate design. The rectangular, hinged top lifts to open two hinged swing-out cabinets, each with 14 cabinets with elaborate pierced brass handles, enclosing an open compartment with a small two-door cabinet, flanked by single drawers. The cabinet is on a plinth base with shaped bracket feet. The whole cabinet has extensive applied brass decoration. It sold for R31000.
