GUINNESS GHANA Breweries Limited (GGBL), one of the nation's most celebrated businesses has commissioned a new Effluent Treatment Plant (ETP) at its Kaasi Brewery in Kumasi in the Ashanti Region.
The ETP, which was installed by an English company, Kruger UK, would treat the waste water created from the company's production, to meet the required EPA and international standards.
The ETP, which according to Kruger UK is also known as waste water treatment plant, is based on a two-stage biological treatment process, known as the anaerobic and aerobic.
The project, which is estimated at ¢50 billion, is designed to treat a Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD) load of 12 tons per day, which is about double the current average load of the Kaasi Brewery.
In his welcome address at the commissioning of the plant on Wednesday, the Managing Director of GGBL, Mr. Seni Adetu said the ETP would make the brewery environmentally compliant by reducing its COD level to the permissible level.
According to him, this would ensure that releasing waste water into the water bodies would not have any adverse effect on aquatic fauna and flora.
He explained that the plant would further release Biogas (methane) that could be used in the future as fuel in the brewery to reduce energy consumption.
He said Ghana was a favorable country to operate in and commended the government for creating an enabling environment in the country for investment.
The Minister of Local Government, Rural Development and Environment, Hon. Asamoah Boateng recounted GGBL's achievements and continuous contribution to the socio-economic development of Ghana, saying, "the success story of GGBL testifies to the government's resolve to maintain a business-friendly environment for the private sector to grow."
Also, Mr. J.A. Allotey, Executive Director of the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), commended GGBL for its commitment to the integration of environmental management in the operations of the company through its participation in the pilot EPRD programmes. "What GGBL has done is a direct response to Ghana's Environmental Policy which seeks to make high quality environment a key element in supporting the country's economic and social development", he added.
The Special Guest of Honour, His Majesty, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, the Asantehene, said Asanteman and the people of Ghana are immensely grateful to GGBL for its role in the socio-economic development of the nation, particularly for its corporate social responsibility (CSR) initiatives, and urged other corporate bodies in Ghana to emulate their example.
