Uganda: Maternal Deaths Remain High

Kampala — WITH 435 deaths per every 100,000 live births, Uganda is still far from achieving UN targets on reducing maternal mortality by 2015.

Johnson Nkuuhe, a support Advisor on Millennium Development Goals for Uganda said the country is performing poorly in addressing three of the eight millennium development goals and could easily fail to meet the targets by the set year.

"Uganda has made little progress in meeting the MDG targets on maternal mortality, child and infant mortality and promotion of gender equality and women empowerment," Dr Nkuuhe said.

The eight MDGs which range from halving extreme poverty to halting the spread of HIV/Aids and providing universal primary education by the year 2015, are a blueprint agreed to by all world countries.

The World Health Organisation estimates that about 250,000 mothers die every year in Africa as a result of complications due to pregnancy and childbirth. In 2000, world leaders agreed through the Millenium Development Goals to slash the number of maternal deaths by 75% by 2015.
